Battery Giant CATL Unveils Breakthrough EV Technologies

6 May 2025

China’s CATL, a global leader in battery technology, has announced three major technological advances that could have a significant impact on the EV industry. These innovations were unveiled in Shanghai on the eve of the world’s largest auto show.

Next-generation fast charging

CATL has improved its ultra-fast charging technology by unveiling an updated version of the Shenxing battery. The new development allows for a range of 520 kilometers after just 5 minutes of charging, significantly surpassing the previous record of 400 kilometers from competitor BYD.

Key Features:

  • Maximum charging power: 1.3 megawatts
  • Low temperature charging capability: 5% to 80% in 15 minutes at -10°C

Sodium-ion batteries are ready for commercial use

The company announced that it is ready for serial production of sodium-ion batteries under the Naxtra brand. These batteries have been tested in extreme temperature conditions and offer several advantages:

  • Range: up to 200 km for hybrids, up to 500 km for electric vehicles
  • Lower cost compared to lithium analogues
  • Increased safety and resistance to fire

CATL predicts that this technology can replace up to 50% of the lithium iron phosphate battery market.

Record range: 1,500 km on a single charge

The third innovation is a two-section battery that provides an unprecedented range. The design includes:

  • A main module for fast charging
  • An additional module for increasing the power reserve
  • A total range of up to 1,500 km without recharging

Political restrictions on the spread of technology

Despite the technological breakthrough, these developments may not appear in the US market anytime soon due to:

  • Trade restrictions imposed by the Trump administration
  • China’s restrictions on the export of rare earth elements
  • CATL’s inclusion in the list of companies associated with the Chinese military

While CATL batteries are already used by manufacturers such as Tesla and Ford, the prospects for licensing new technologies in the US remain uncertain. This could create a significant technological gap for the American auto industry in the coming years.
