Afghanistan Takes A Step Toward Energy Independence: Construction Of Three Solar Power Plants Has Begun

22 May 2025

Afghanistan is actively developing renewable energy: construction of three photovoltaic solar power plants with a total capacity of 103 MW has begun in the provinces of Balkh, Nangarhar and Kabul. These projects should strengthen the country’s energy system and reduce dependence on electricity imports.

New stations – new opportunities

A groundbreaking ceremony for a 40 MW solar power plant was held recently in the northern province of Balkh. The $28 million project should significantly improve the region’s energy supply.

A similar 40 MW station has begun construction in Jalalabad (Nangarhar province). Another 23 MW facility is being built in the Sarubi district (Kabul) next to the Naghlu hydroelectric power station. Its cost is estimated at $18 million.

Growth of energy capacity and a call for investment

DABS CEO Abdul Bari Omar noted that the country, which previously had only 250 MW of generating capacity, is now implementing projects with a total capacity of 900 MW. This is an important step towards energy stability.

At the opening ceremonies, government officials emphasized the role of solar energy in supporting the economy and called on the private sector to invest more actively in the industry. Ghazanfar and Zularistan, the companies involved in the projects, confirmed their readiness to invest in the development of Afghanistan’s energy sector.

Prospects and expectations

Details about the technology partners and types of solar panels have not yet been disclosed, but the successful implementation of these projects could become an impetus for further growth of clean energy in the country. If the pace of construction continues, Afghanistan will be able to reduce the electricity deficit and create the basis for sustainable development in the coming years.

Solar energy opens up new opportunities for Afghanistan, and these projects are an important step towards energy self-sufficiency.
