Spanish Solar Power Is On The Rise

18 February 2025

According to the Spanish system operator Red Eléctrica, in January 2025, the installed capacity of solar photovoltaic power in Spain exceeded 32 GW. Solar power accounted for 26.7% of the total installed capacity, of which 24.9% was photovoltaic and 1.8% was solar thermal. Wind power came in second with a share of 24.9%.

The total share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the installed capacity of the Spanish power system in January 2025 was 65.9%. In 2024, Spain added 6.64 GW of new solar photovoltaic capacity, up from 5.59 GW in 2023. Electricity consumption in 2024 increased by 0.8% year-on-year, reaching 247,038 GWh. Taking into account the adjustment for working hours and temperature, the consumption growth was 1.4%.

The share of renewable energy in electricity generation in 2024 reached 55.8%, which is 6% higher than in 2023. According to the current legislation, the share of renewable energy in generation should reach 81% by 2030. In 2024, the authorities approved 727 new renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 26.2 GW, of which 22.3 GW were solar energy.

Wind power generated 60,846 GWh in 2024, which is less than in 2023 (62,670 GWh), but remained the largest source of electricity with a share of 22.9%. The share of nuclear energy in generation was 19.6%. Photovoltaic plants produced 44,520 GWh, which is the highest figure in history.

The share of solar photovoltaic energy in generation was 16.7%, solar thermal – 1.6%. In total, the share of solar energy reached 18.3%. The share of variable renewable energy sources (photovoltaics and wind) in generation was about 40%. The share of coal in electricity generation in 2024 fell to a historical minimum of 1.1%. In January 2025, the share of solar photovoltaic generation in total monthly generation was 9.5%.
