Inner Mongolia’s Installed Renewable Energy Capacity Exceeds Thermal Power Plant Capacity

8 January 2025

Regional renewable energy use growth

Installed capacity

In December 2024, the total installed capacity of renewable energy in Inner Mongolia reached 120 GW, exceeding the thermal power plant (TPP) capacity of 117 GW. The region’s renewable energy sources are represented by solar and wind power plants, while thermal power plants are coal-fired.

Including 3 GW of hydroelectric power plants, Inner Mongolia’s total installed power capacity is 240 GW, the highest among all provinces in China.

Energy resources

The region has 57% of China’s wind and 21% of solar resources. The Inner Mongolia Energy Bureau optimizes the planning and connection of new power facilities, shortening their implementation time and improving dispatching management.

To speed up the approval and construction of projects, 13 new measures have been implemented. The document processing time for renewable energy projects has been reduced from 6 to 3 months, and for centralized solar power plants, to 1 month.

Power generation and economic effect

Grid-connected renewable energy sources generate 270 billion kWh of electricity annually, equivalent to saving 84 million tons of coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 220 million tons. In two years, the installed capacity of renewable energy sources in the region has doubled from 60 GW in 2022 to 120 GW in 2024.

Investment and prospects

Investment in new renewable energy projects in 2022 amounted to 130 billion yuan, five times more than in 2021. In 2023, this figure rose to 170 billion yuan, and in the first 11 months of 2024, it reached 161.2 billion yuan.

In 2023, the share of electricity generated by solar and wind amounted to 166.53 billion kWh, or 21.8% of the total generation in the region. The structural transformation of the energy sector is aimed at achieving peak emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
