New Measures To Develop Nuclear Energy In The USA

10 June 2025

On May 26, 2025, US President Donald Trump signed four executive orders concerning nuclear energy. The documents include:

  1. Changing the Department of Energy’s nuclear reactor testing procedures
  2. Reorganizing the work of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)
  3. Implementing advanced nuclear technologies for national security
  4. Measures to restore the production capacity of the nuclear industry

Current indicators of the US nuclear energy industry

  • Number of operating reactors: 94
  • Installed capacity: about 97 GW
  • Share of electricity generation: 17.8% (2024)
  • Average reactor life: 42 years
  • Volume of uranium imports for nuclear power plants: 99% of total consumption (2023)

Target indicators

  • Increase in nuclear generation capacity: from 100 GW (2024) to 400 GW (2050)
  • Reconstruction of existing capacities: +5 GW
  • Design and start of construction: 10 new power units by 2030

Factors Affecting Implementation

The construction of two new reactors at the Vogtle nuclear power plant required $35 billion with an initial estimate of $14 billion. The NuScale small modular reactor project was stopped in November 2023 due to rising costs.

In March 2024, the House of Representatives passed the Nuclear Energy Development Act, aimed at updating the regulatory framework for the industry.
